He won the Best Screenplay Award at the 32nd Japan Academy Awards and the Best Foreign Language Screenplay at the 81st Academy Awards for the film "Departures." In addition to his writing career, he serves as vice president of Kyoto University of Arts, owner of Shimogamo Saryo, and thematic project producer for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. He is also the creator of "Kumamon."
