#02 Encounters, good friends and good mentors

Familia's development has been marked by many benefactors who are essential to its success.
I have met, cooperated with, and received support from many irreplaceable people.

Michio Banno

Born in 1916, he married Atsuko Sakano in 1940. He worked under Kiyoshi Onoe at the Sasaki Sales Department (later Renown) until 1952. He joined Familia and became the company's second president.
Within the company, she took the lead and energetically utilized the knowledge she had cultivated in accounting, general affairs, sales, and other areas. Rather than expanding the company, she valued creating and providing good things for children, and made a significant contribution to the development of Familia.

Words of Michio Sakano

Employees should have character. Products should have dignity. Stores should have style.
Familia is an indispensable company in the world, and each of us should aim to be an indispensable part of the company.

Mr. Ren Motoda

He was the owner of Motoya Shoe Store in Kobe Center Street, and a skilled shoemaker who frequented the Sasaki family, Atsuko's family home before the war.
He encouraged Atsuko to make and sell handmade products, which led to the founders finding work in Kobe.
He served as the first president of Familia Co., Ltd. when it was founded, but resigned in 1952 to pursue his main business as a shoe shop. He continued to serve as a director of Familia for four years and as an auditor until his death in 1962.

Mr. Kiyoshi Onoe

Born in 1911 as the eldest son of Seto Onoe, he worked as the right-hand man of Yasohachi Sasaki, father of Atsuko Sakano, at the Sasaki Sales Department (later Renown). Even after becoming chairman of Renown, he continued to lead the company and motivate its employees.
In 1947, Chiyo Tanaka (founder of Tanaka Chiyo Gakuen), who was also Tamura Etsuko's handicraft teacher, established the Design Room and held the first postwar fashion show, sparking a boom in dressmaking.
He was also the person who initiated the founding of Familia and continued to support its development after its founding.

Words from Kiyoshi Onoe

What determines success in the business world is wisdom, not knowledge. Knowledge can be imported by reading or listening, but wisdom is something you create yourself.
To do this, you need to think. By thinking and then acting, you accumulate wisdom.

Masashi Shimizu

Born in 1901, he was the first president of Hankyu Department Stores after it was spun off from Hankyu Corporation in 1947. He was active in a wide range of fields, serving as president of Hankyu Kyoei Bussan in 1952, chairman of Hankyu Department Stores, chairman of Toho in 1966, and chairman of Hankyu Corporation in 1968.
When Familia was founded, Masashi Shimizu happened to notice the store while strolling around Kobe with his wife, which led to the decision to open a Familia store in Hankyu Department Store on April 16, 1951. He is one of the benefactors who is essential to the history of Familia up to the present day.

Words from Masashi Shimizu

There is a man who loves a woman, and there is a woman who loves a man. This is the pinnacle of family peace. The word "Familia" is a symbol of family peace. This is the reason why the Familia Group has developed.

Hisako Ogase

She was a baby nurse specializing in foreigners who worked at the Foreign Village in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and taught Atsuko Sakano Western child-rearing methods.
Atsuko was impressed by Dr. Ogase, and the Western child-rearing methods she learned from him became the foundation of Familia, and she supported Familia as a baby consultant.
The birth of Familia cannot be discussed without mentioning Professor Ogase.

Atsuko Sakano story

The teacher's child-rearing methods are based on solid medical evidence and are combined with practical methods that are both rational and deeply loving.
I believe that you are one of the few people worthy of being called a national treasure in Japan.
